Switch Sports Resort Does Not Discourage Me

My thoughts on the Switch Sports Resort reveal and why Super Sports Isle is still moving forward.

The Reveal

Earlier this year, I heard the rumors and leaks about a Switch Sports 2 coming this summer, and while I was a little discouraged, I accepted it then, and I'm accepting it now that I've seen the reveal trailer. It's Nintendo's IP, and nobody is going to fault them for making their own game.

Why This Does Not Discourage Me

However, it doesn't discourage me. If anything, it's reignited my passion for WHY I'm making this.

I think what worried me was that Nintendo would essentially build what Super Sports Isle is meant to be, and leave me high and dry as an indie fan project nobody cares about. But, from what I can see, though, Nintendo unfortunately pulled a Nintendo and failed to deliver.

Now, the game isn't out yet, so nobody knows, but they are still using the Sportsmates, which leave much to be desired in terms of customizability, and they essentially copy-pasted five of the 12 sports from Switch Sports here: Bowling, Basketball, Tennis, Golf, and Volleyball. All just sort of placed with no intentionality or context in the world. Volleyball isn't even on the beach, and Golf looks like it has the exact same holes.

Pivoting

This actually makes my marketing for Super Sports Isle better, because I can say, "I loved Wii Sports Resort, and I was disappointed with how Nintendo handled Switch Sports Resort and left things out." Previously, it was some jargon about how "they didn't make Switch Sports Resort, and even if they did, it didn't matter because they left out the single-player progression, achievements, and the magic that made the original and Wii Sports Resort great!"

At least they brought back Boxing, which I was always planning as well, but they forfeited Baseball for Thumb Wrestling??? Skateboarding is at least cool, since I had planned that eventually for Super Sports Isle too.

It seems their priorities are in the wrong place, and not much makes this stand out.

Maybe I'm wrong, and I'll be purchasing the game in October to see what they've done (if they don't have more trailers showing off additional game modes). Still, I can't shake the feeling that we won't have more Golf courses, 100-pin Bowling, achievements, etc.

What Makes Super Sports Isle Different

Super Sports Isle maintains its original mission, build out an expansive open world full of sports that are placed in context and feel like a bigger resort that you're actually attending.

Have stamps for your resort card, find secrets, unlock extra modes, play more than 1 golf course over and over and over.

Have a singleplayer progression and unlockables, and not just full online fest.

Super Sports Isle is the game I always wanted to play growing up, and it's the game I DO wish Nintendo would make, but they won't.

What Comes Next

I continue working on the game. I've taken a small break and am working on a tower defense crafty buildy game, which should be coming out in about two months, but I am still working on Super Sports Isle. I just had this small idea as a break from driving myself insane, as potential income generation to fund Super Sports Isle, and as a potential application for porting this game to Switch. That way, I can gain access to the SDK and dev kit for Switch, so I can launch Super Sports Isle day one on Switch, if they let me lmao.
